Tooth Extraction

A tooth that is severely decayed, damaged, or loose due to gum disease may need to be extracted (removed from your mouth).

Wisdom teeth sometimes require extraction if they come in at an awkward angle and cause problems.

In children, teeth may be extracted to help other teeth grow straight when there is overcrowding.

What Will My Dentist Do?

The ease of extraction can vary. A local anesthetic (an injection in your mouth) will be used to numb the tooth before it is extracted. For children, nervous patients, or difficult extractions, sedation (something to make you drowsy) may be used along with a local anesthetic. In rare cases, a general anesthetic may be necessary, requiring a visit to the hospital, though you can typically go home the same day.

Your dentist will assess the best approach for the extraction and discuss it with you:
