New Teeth Development
Primary teeth, commonly known as “baby” teeth, start to erupt between six to twelve months of age. It is recommended that children have their first dental appointment within six months of the appearance of the first tooth or by their first birthday. Baby teeth will continue to come in until around age three, totaling 20 primary teeth. These teeth will begin to fall out around age six, making way for permanent teeth.
Protecting Children’s Teeth
As children learn to brush and floss properly, they may need extra protection to keep their teeth cavity-free. Dental sealants can provide this protection. Applied to the back teeth in a single appointment, sealants form a thin, plastic coating that acts as a barrier against food particles, bacteria, and plaque. Sealants last for several years and can be reapplied if needed.
Developing Healthy Oral Hygiene Habits
Supervise your child’s brushing until you are confident they can do it on their own without swallowing toothpaste. Fluoride use should be based on your dentist’s advice. Schedule dental cleanings and exams every six months. If your child participates in sports, ensure they use a sports guard to protect their teeth
